The Keys to Success

quote On your Check Test, the SE is looking for exactly the same skills as they are on a Part 3 . . . and the main area is the Core Competencies. The most important area of instruction is identifying and dealing with driver errors, so make sure you know how to put these skills to use quote

Make the Grade

Check Test Grades. What will you achieve?Due to poor training and a lack of teaching skills, a significant number of recently qualified ADI's are being graded as 'E'. There are also large numbers of experienced instructors who fail to make the grade because they did not recognise the need to improve. They risk losing their livelihood if they fail to develop their skills

The core skills of Fault Identification, Fault Analysis and Remedial Action are just as important for your check test as they are in Part 3.

For a check test however, all the other sub skills of teaching become far more important and take on a much greater degree of significance.

At part 3, the SE will have chosen the route, will have given you the directions and will even have chosen the lesson subject. For your check test, you will have to take control and responsibility for all of this, and much, much more.

At the conclusion of your check test the SE will invite you to discuss your performance, and then award you a grade.

If the SE decides that your instruction has been to an acceptable standard, you will be awarded a grade of 4, 5, or 6

Alternatively, if your instruction has been inadequate or even dangerous, you will be awarded a grade of 1, 2, or 3.

You can achieve a '6' on your first check test, as many have provedIf this is your first check test, and you've been qualified for less than 12 months, the SE is allowed to award a different result. If your training has been to an acceptable level, you will be awarded a pass grade as above and you will receive a 4, 5 or 6. However, should the SE feel that you need extra experience to develop your skills, you may be awarded an 'E' grade.

Your first check test is usually referred to as an 'Educational' and the 'E' grade reflects this. The option to award an 'E' means that the SE does not have to fail you on your first check.

If you achieve a grade of 'E', 1, 2, or 3 you will be invited back for a further check test in the near future.

Should your performance continue to be poor in subsequent check tests, the DSA can take action to remove you from the register, effectively removing your means of earning a living. It may seem like a harsh step, but we need safe drivers on the roads. Unsafe instructors don't help the situation.

If you make the grade and receive a 4, 5 or 6, you can confidently expect to earn a living 'check test free' for about 4 years, after which time you'll be due a further check test
