The Briefing
In the briefing you need to ask targeted questions to establish the learners skill levels. Look at the page on level of instruction for more information.
Remember, you need to teach from the known to the unknown. So get to know your learners history. Find out what skills and experience they have that could contribute to whatever this lesson subject is, and use that information as a base on which to build.
For example, if the lesson is crossroads and your learner is at phase 1, find out what they know about crossroads before you teach them anything.
What skills could help them learn how to deal with crossroads?
Can they approach junction - Yes! they'll have done this before attempting crossroads
Can the emerge? Yes! for the very same reasons
Do they know 'peep and creep'? - Yes! because it was covered on the emerge lesson
Do they know what give way lines mean? - Yes! again, covered on emerging
Do they know what ms-psl is and can the apply it? - Yes! again it was covered before
So, why teach any of these things? It would be a waste of your time and the learners time. All you need to do is simply establish the level of knowledge with a few targeted questions.
Q and A in the briefing allows you to establish the base from which to teach. It gives you the foundations on which to base your level of instruction
